The Kernan Equestrian Centre as it is today opened in February 2007 and is owned and run by James Kernan, former international and Olympic showjumper. The indoor school was originally built in 1967 by James’s father the late Frank Kernan and was one of the first in the country. Back then as well as been used to train young horses it hosted showjumping competitions. Many well known names such as David Broome and Gratziano Mancenelli were frequent visitors to Crossmaglen as clients of Frank, always lookng for the next promising youngster who had the pontential for the big time and many famous horses passed through here. Kernan Equestrian Centre comprises of two arenas, one indoor and one outdoor.
Today the focus is on showjumping competitions. Throughout the year we host legs of several national Grand Prix Leagues, NI Amatuer Championships, Interschools events , coaching seminars and novelty events such as our annual Christmas Fun Day. We run four horse & pony registered leagues a year plus weekly training shows for horses and ponies. Our winter leagues are held in the indoor arena and then around May we move out of doors. These competitions are open to all.
Both arenas have excellent Martin Collins surfaces. The outdoor arena consists of silica sand and Martin Collins fibre. We have a set of "Caro" international Grand Prix standard fences which are used at SJI registered and Training Shows offering an opportunity to train over an international course of show jumps.
